Bringing home dog for the first time? and introducing im to my cat?

hi, i'm getting a dog from an animal shelter. he is a male papillion mix, and he's six years old. when i got to meet him, he was really sweet and friendly. he's energetic and wanted to be outside all of the time. im bringing him home from the shelter soon, and he's my first dog.

how should i do this? i dont want to overwhelm him when he comes too his new home. i also have a cat that needs to be introduced to him. the staff said he's okay with cats, but how do introduce them? thanks

Our best advice was to keep the pets in separate rooms with a door that has a big enough gap at the bottom that they can exchange sounds and smells for a day or two, so the confrontation dynamic is softened, and a familiar atmosphere can develop.

You can put them either side of a cage/wire mesh so they can see and smell eachother without getting too close.
With puppies (and I don't see why you can't try it on an adult dog) you can restrain the dog and let them near to the cat whilst restrained.
