SEATTLE, Wash. -- PCC'S Marilyn Walls is hooked on the smelly stuff. "I'm an essential oil addict," said the store's educator and aromatherapy expert. Wells says gifts made from essential oils have all kinds of benefits.
"First of all they smell good. But they have emotional work to do, and then they are great for our skin."
Plus, scents effect moods:
"Probably the one that's the most well known is lavender. It's a beautiful oil that's very relaxing," said Wells.
PCC has all the ingredients for do-it-yourself aromatherapy gifts, from soothing epsom salts that are locally made -- to essence of actual Christmas tree!
Chef Lynnne Vea demonstrated how easy it is to whip up some delicious smelling gifts.
Her first trick? Save money by picking up some ingredients in the grocery aisles.
"So we're going to put together a warm, winter scented sugar scrub." she explained. "Just a few really simple ingredients go together to make this scrub, and it's just incredibly satisfying. Just a couple of cups of granulated sugar, sugar is a really nice gentle exfoliant, is the base for this. And then, I'm going to put in about a cup of carrier oil.
"In this case I've chosen to use the grapeseed oil, which I love, which I just got right off of the baking aisle."
Then Vea adds rosemary oil and tangerine oil for the scent. The tangerine oil has cheering properties according to Walls:
"Citrus is good for any kind of skin, and they're very uplifting oils," said Walls. "They're all about happiness."
The finished scrub is just as luxurious as something that would cost top dollar pre-made. And talk about pure: the scrub only has four ingredients, all organic. "It's fabulous for getting you skin nice and smooth," Vea said.
But the best thing about this homemade gift? Not a calorie in sight.
