I've recently adopted a 4 month old kitten and i already had 3 adult cats and this is what i did successfully:
as soon as you bring your new cat home, give it a room, a litter box, and food all to itself. Make sure to keep the door closed but try to encourage your other cats to hang around the door ( i would feed them at the same time on opposite sides of the door) so they can get used to each others scent. for the first 3 days i never let the cats see eachother and kept them segregated. for day 4, i brought one of the cats into the seperate room with the new kitten and supervised play time for about an hour. I did that with each cat. Hissing and swatting is natural just make sure you are there to break up any fights. Day 5 i extended the play time longer and day 6 i put them all in at the same time for a few hours. By day 7 the house was completely open for all the cats to come and go as they pleased. Its been about a month and my one cat still but rarely hisses at the kitten but besides that, they are all pretty much get along. It takes time and a lot of patience!
