How do you introduce the other partner in a gay marriage if you don't personally

acknowledge it? If a person does not acknowledge gay marriage personally, is there a way to introduce the gay partner of a relative in a way that doesn't offend the person ? A Thanksgiving meal is being planned and it will be difficult to say Hi all this is Mike and his husband Steve. But I don't want to offend Steve or raise a big issue with other family members.

If you don't want to offend Mike, introduce him and his husband as they wish to be introduced. If someone has an issue with that it will be between Mike, Steve and whomever objects. Ask Mike ahead of time and show him that much courtesy. If he's not welcome at your table you should muster up enough sincerity to let him know. If it's your table, you set the rules, it's either all are welcome or only some are welcome. It's your call.

You could say this is my very good friend George. There is no need to go into detail.

I should think 'Mike and his partner, Steve' would be ok. If they want to elaborate on the fact that they are married, that's up to them. That way, you remain polite and neutral. After all, plenty of straight, married people refer to themselves as partners these days. I rather like 'partners' anyway - more descriptive of modern relationships.
