PEOPLE PLEASE ANSWER!!! What are the advantages of having idle chit-chat

& "shooting the breeze" with? neighbors? And do you think it's a waste of time?

Getting to know your neighbors is part of our lost culture and we are worse for it. I remember growing up in the 50's and early 60's our neighbors looked out for us as well as our own parents. Believe me if our neighbor saw me doing something out of line or dangerous, my parents would know about it. The eyes of the neighborhood were always on us.

Also, developing friends and relationships are crucial to your mental well being. Be a good friend and you will generate friendships.

It's a good idea to get to know your neighbors...you could be there for each other if need be...like just because of shooting the breeze now and then with our neighbor, he came and plowed the snow from our driveway a couple times for free!

It is most definitely not a waste of time. Getting to know your neighbors is very valuable as it gives you both a frame of reference for times of emergency and need. For example, if you want to borrow something, or need a ride because you have run out of gas, or if you see someone acting suspiciously, or you want them to keep an eye on your house while you are away.

Having said that, it is also important not to take advantage or be taken advantage of. So, we try to strike a balance between being a friend and being a nuisance. Most people manage this well.
