upper shoulder and neck pain

My Mom has been having pain in her right shoulder for a very long time....she can hardly lift her arm or move it around as in circumduction...everytime she goes to turn right she gets a sharp pain going down her are....what do you think is going on? and what is there that i can do that will help her feel better?

How long has this been going on? Did she injure it in someway? Is she involved in anything that could be causing a repetitive strain injury?

Have you tried ice?

You said that this has been going on for a long time. Has it gotten worse or just not gotten better?

She may need to see a doctor. My concern would be that it is going into Frozen Shoulder Syndrome.

A few questions for you ...

Is the pain present in both active and passive ROM?

Can you break down the arm/shoulder movement even further? Does the pain come when the arm is in flexion/extension/lateral flexion/internal or external rotation? What about the shoulder in elevation/protraction/retraction? The neck in rotation and lateral flexion?

Have you massaged or palpated the neck/shoulder/arm? What did you find?

How long is "a very long time"?

The answers to these questions will help give us a more detailed look at what might be happening and what you might try.

it is due to a injury on march 7th 2008 yes the pain is present in both active and passive ROM. no she hasnt used any ice. had a x-ray one week after the fall. it said stretched tendons and ligaments going to the orthopedic specialist on may 13th its hurts to ABduct the arm. cant rest well at night time...taking alieve at the present time.

I don't like the idea of diagnosing or suggesting thoughts of what is going in a situation like this, over the internet. Especially when it is second-hand info and not coming directly from the source. History is, in my opinion, usually 80% of the diagnosis.

My suggestion, find a good orthopedic (preferrably on who only cuts when he/she has to). Find out the actual cause and then work with your massage knowledge from there. They may suggest PT or surgery. If surgery is needed, you'll probably have to wait on the hands-on therapies for a bit anyway.

PS: Just scrolled through this thread and see you have the appointment set up. Hope you let us know how it went.
