Beware this book for newbies
mg: Thai girls, just like most other right-handed people when given a book to appraise, start to flick through it from back to front... and what's in the back? The sections on Girls & Money and Love & Marriage...
Some girls have a real sense of humour which can freak a newbie out when they start pointing out phrases like "Send me money every month" (p162), "Can you buy me a wedding ring?" (p160) and "How many babies shall we have?" (p120)
One girl, when I asked (via the book) if she liked working here (the bar), started pointing to the more poignant entries like "No, I don't like my job", "I need money", "I need money for my family", "I have a a baby to take care of" (all p21) - this gave me a severe case of the "what am I doings" and, although she realized quickly what she had done and found "I'm just joking" (p25) the mood was dead and I backed off. Since then I've avoided asking girls if they like their job and go for the safer "How long have you worked here?" (p17)
What I will do for next time is photocopy the 'safe' phrases for use in the bar on the first night and keep the full book for an LT with whom things have settled and some understanding developed.
Do get the book, by all means, just don't give a complete stranger free-range with it... :bangin:
Cheers,
K.
