I am always amazed at how posts can so quickly move off topic here. The initial post seems to seek an opinion or other wise inform you that there is a petition in play to remove Justin’s dad statue. The reasoning his government authored the “White Paper”. A document intended to replace the Indian act and one which at its’ heart sought to remove the status of indigenous peoples across this country. Discarding treaties rights granted by earlier generations. This is a very simplified view but correct non the less.

You may agree or disagree with the notion of removing statues of past leaders that supported positions against human rights. Removing a statue does not mean history changes it does mean history must be looked at very carefully. Crimes against humanity don’t expire with the deaths of those who are responsible.

Roughly 21% of Canadians were not born in Canada (my number may be wrong but I did look it up). Most came here seeking a better life. Most I would suggest would know little or nothing of the past and unseen practices of our Government with regards to the indigenous peoples who were here long before us. Most Canadian born here know little to nothing about it. It is certainly not required to pass the citizenship test.

As to who fathered Justin, who really cares.

What should matter to us all is that the “Truth and Reconciliation” process was the result of continuous pressure in the courts of this country to recognize what the indigenous have suffered here. I am sure many have the impression that this was a Justin incentive to make things right. He uses it in the press as if he is the second coming of Nelson Mandela. He is not.

The government has been slow to act on many of the recommendations he commit to on behave of all Canadians. He will leave office with this process very much unfinished regardless of how many terms his party holds power.

I'm definitely NOT signing it. You don't remove statues of our leaders of the past, unless you're talking about Hitler or Drunk Trump. Removing statues is for Cry Babies who want to run and hide from the past. By removing statues, you are removing our history. Canadian borns, and Canadian immigrants have the right to recognize who our past leaders were, even though they were not perfect in everyone's minds. We should already understand that no human being is perfect. Removing statues will not make things perfect, but they will make things worse.

Hiding people and removing them from the public every time they make a mistake is nonsense and rediculous.

For me I hope people are awakened by such acts to understanding the history behind it that causes people to find a statue a personal affront to their lives and beliefs and take such actions. Lets be honest statues of people are always created to celebrate their accomplishments never their flaws. Toppling statues is not new it has been around for centuries. Here are two articles discussing recent events. How Statues Are Falling Around the World (Published 2020) and Toppling Statues Isn’t Enough in Latin America. We may not remember al the names of the statues which were toppled following the collapse of the Soviet Union but we understand the frustrations of those who when given the opportunity toppled them. Do any of us here think the history of the persons who had their statues toppled have been better served had the statues remained? We can understand the toppling of former Soviet block leaders because we were all taught that the the Soviets' Union was bad.

I think the difficult thing here is as Canadians we have been given a vision of ourselves as Peace keepers, defenders of human rights, better then Americans. We even believe we treated or indigenous population better then the American did.

I encourage everyone to kwon their history. History does have a way of repeating itself. The history we don't know is the most dangerous kind.

I would sense is almost always absent when a statue is toppled. Maybe there would be fewer statues toppled if there was a 100 year waiting period before one could put up in the first place. History is very slow to reveal itself. I would exempt service animals and pets that preformed notable acts of bravery to save human lives from that rule.
