Every ten years (if we're being generous), capitalism goes into catastrophic failure and every year we're told that we either need austerity, privatization, or changes in regulation. There is far less evidence for capitalism being 'the best available economic system' than there is of anthropogenic global warming, but I don't think anyone who thinks "people living on a toonie a day just need to pull themeselves up by their bootstraps" came to their conclusion by critically examining evidence.

The more government gets involved in the economy, the more catastrophic failures will occur. The best evidence of the success of capitalism is life expectancy. Today in the western world, we are regularly seeing people living well into their 90's. That wasn't the case even 30-40 years ago.
Unfortunately that increased life expectancy is taxing the system because governments are having to pay pensions for much longer than they had projected. Damn you capitalism!!

Again, the level of government intervention ebbs and flows, but failures still occur and the degree to which they are more or less catastrophic is piddling at best.

So if we take for granted all these premises are true, it would still be self-contradictory, because you take it as axiomatic that today's nominatively capitalist economies are not 'really' capitalist because of a high degree of regulation. Also, the existence of a welfare state (which is the reason pensions even exist) is at best a social democratic innovation (ie, a compromise with socialism). Luckily (?) there's an out: the 'western world' and 'capitalist economies' are not analogous. Most of the world cannot be considered the west, and it remains capitalist, yet the same trends are not observed universally. Almost as if these are slogans and not facts.
