let me just say before I start that I absolutely don’t believe what happened to George Floyd was right and that cop got what he deserved. And I definitely do believe that the way cops treat blacks and minorities are different than the way they treat white criminals for sure.

Saying that I don’t mind cops. Why? Cause they keep me safe. I’m not short sighted enough to scream “defund the police“. That’s dumb. And we wonder why shootings in toronto are at a record high. Police are an authority, and people need to respect that. Yes I have gotten some speeding tickets and got pissed at the cop who trapped me. But I’m honest enough to know I probably deserved it. The problem with today’s society is no one is scared of the cops. Society has pretty much removed any threat that they once possessed. As my friend who works for Peel Region Police says “they want us to cook eggs without cracking any shells”. Cops are regular people like any of us. In the end they just want to get paid, go home and make their pension. 99% of them wouldn’t dare draw a gun or shoot a black man without absolute certainty that their life was in danger. They call in the SIU, make the media, face is on the cover of news papers. All of sudden the cop is a racist. Forget that. It’s easier for cops to just not patrol the bad areas now and just wait for calls. Reactive instead of proactive. But this is what society has done to them. It’s my tax dollars, my city and my safety also. So I can voice my opinion and say I fully support more police powers and funding.

As for this video you posted. Police offers deal with scum and shit everyday. Obviously not all of them are saints and follow protocol 100%. Do I really care if they dislocate a criminals shoulder when trying to apprehend them? I rather the criminal be behind bars then worry about their civil rights. If rules were broken then can try to sue. That’s their right. In the end, I rather have safe streets with mean cops than rough streets with nice cops. But I’m also not black. I did watch the body cam video that killed byran. The girl who was about to stab another girl. Did thr cop had a taser to stop byran? I don't think he had another weapon except for the gun. If he didn't shoot byran, the girl in the pink shirt would be hurt or possibly dead. When that happens the public will blame the cops for doing nothing. Cops are damned if they shoot, they are damned if they just sit there doing nothing.

If this blaming without justified reasons, we will be losing a lot of good cops. At the end of the day no police officer wants to spent a day in jail for doing what is right.

Its just my belief. I ask myself if I was a cop and had to deal with these criminals would I treat poor blacks and latinos differently than I would treat well dressed and educated white criminals? I would like to think not. But deep down inside I know its human nature to believe certain races create more crime than others. Some are more likely to run, fight back, mouth off etc. Some areas of the city like Jane and Finch have a higher rate of crime. What’s the population there? Would I be more cautious with my finger on the trigger patrolling those streets than in Forest Hill? Is my training different for those bad areas? Do I practice more with my gun and self defence training than I would if I were in a rich white area? These are all things we need to consider when we deal with racism. I’m not saying all cops are racist. I’m saying the demographics and the way society perceives crime has a way of influencing your personal opinions and judgements.

Thanks, that's an honest answer, and I've no doubt that to a considerable extent, it's a correct one. It's a truism, but cops are human after all. I've always thought some police who are thought of (or accused of being) racist must sorely wish the accuser had to walk a mile in his shoes.

From your answer though, I suspect that if you examined your own views you might find them to be more nuanced than the statement you originally made, which is that you believe police treat black criminals differently from white criminals. In your scenario the white guy is well dressed and educated. What if a cop sees a rough looking white guy committing a crime, do you think he'd treat him much differently than a black? That would be comparing apples to apples.

Interestingly, the stats from the U.S. (which is our best source) do indicate that police are more prone to use non-lethal force with black suspects--but that among police it is the black and latino officers who are more likely to do so. White officers are less likely to use violence, either lethal or non lethal.

I think this is worse than being a cop problem, it is a problem with people with power not being held accountable and/or people ending up in positions they are not qualified for. I have seen plenty of people from minimum wage workers to CEOS be abusive, vengeful, corrupt, self-serving, petty and incompetent with whatever power they have big or small. For me more power equals more responsibility and therefore requires more accountability. Another factor is leadership - as the saying goes the fish rots from the head down: bad boss, bad workers; good boss, good workers. Take a look at the people around you - how many of them would you trust with unaccountable power? And finally, for those who will push the "a few bad apples" theory, good cops who do not speak out about bad cops are bad cops!

The current job description of the police has become obsolete. Society has evolved quite a bit in the last 50 or 100 years, but police service hasn't evolved with it. Major changes need to be made. For example when someone with mental issues is having an episode and threatening suicide, the police should be re-directing their call to the mental health department, and let them handle the situation. Those are the people, not the police, who are trained for those problems. Another example would be for finding missing children who perhaps ran away from home or just simply got lost. You don't need people with guns to look for lost children. It seems that some people don't understand exactly what people mean when they say, "defund the police". It doesn't mean getting rid of the police. It just means that the powers of the police should adjusted and utilized differently than the way it was in the past.

How does Marco Muzzo get out after 4 years? I never heard that. He was sentenced to something like 10 years.

I just got updated. He was granted full parole. It's probably better that way. He won't get rehabilitated while rotting in prison. That rich kid doesn't need free room and board from us anyways.

There are many ways people get to the front of the line unfairly. My dad used his connections to get me a couple of well paid summer jobs. At one programming gig I had I realized one day that everyone working there had Irish family names, just like me and just like the president of the company. However people end up in their jobs they should be held accountable, provided corrective training when necessary, and re-assigned or fired if they still cannot meet basic standards.

The "Defund the Police" slogan is catchy but a stupid choice that alienates. "Rethink police practices" is closer to the intended meaning but is not at all catchy. More palatable catch phrases like "be reasonable", "try to do better", just do not have much appeal. I like Joe Rogan's catchphrase: "Don't be a cunt!".

The police don’t keep you safe dumbass. When they’re not writing speeding tickets, 99.99% of what they do is reactionary. They don’t prevent crimes, they show up after a crime has been committed.

Society needs police, but at least 60% of cops are pieces of shit. I say that as a white male of above average means and education, who also counts police officers amongst his friends and family members.
