NYC,Phila,Detroit, any major City can whow you the same exact crimes, in fact Ive seen a lot worse in NYC, so its really no different, just different in how its handled and perceived since you're on vacation. Everything is diff in third world countries.
Most airports now have Cops/Army with Sub machine guns anyway,and if you look closely at the gatehouse of any of those All Inclusive places, the guards have automatic weapons, so I would not let it bother me if I were you.Its a lot safer than you think, u just need to be alert, and dont look like a mark(esp when drunk). In your home town you know what to look out for, over there youre easy prey if you let your guard down.
The Bodyguard is not much at all btw, we pitch in $50 each for the whole week, which is a lot more than he makes in a month.

By yourself? I would not recommend it.But it can be done, just that you will probably get taken advantage of , unless you hook up there with another group, which is not hard to do at all. I run into guys from Brooklyn ny all the time over there, sometimes they are even in the same Hotel, which is the best scenario since you can then even split cabs etc.
Been traveling there 4 years , every July, normally 5-8 of us, only 2 of us dont speak spanish,myself included, everyone else does. 2 guys are Cuban, they know exacly what they are doing , and we still hire a bodyguard for the whole week and travel together. In the Capital SD, its pretty safe, but street hustlers will still try to take advantage, and they are pretty good at it too.
At night, Ive pesonally witnessed dead bodies the aftermaths of shootings. they didnt even cover them like they do here, also burning tires & unruly crowds(around election times),lots of potentially dangerous stuff. One woman whos Husband was with a Film crew, she was staying in the same hotel, told us a story of walking with her kids and all of a sudden bullets were flying.
The word is pretty much out that if you fuck with/hurt the tourists, youre dead meat but it can still be dangerous. Stray bullets dont know the rules.
Several times while sightseeing, AR-15/M16 armed security guys(Dom Army I think) would follow us just to be sure we were safe while taking pictures. So I would strongly advise you to go with a group of guys. Its a lot more fun that way, anyway. I cant imagine going there by myself.
The all inclusive places are boring,dont expect too much action there you need to go outside at night,thats where the real fun is.
If anyone is going to be in Santo Domingo 7/23-8/1 (the Merengue festival week) I would be glad to buy u a Presidente beer on the El Malecon.

I'm averaging 3 trips per year to the DR, each one lasting about a week. It is everything you could want, good and bad. If you keep your head about you, as with anywhere you hobby, a great time can be had with beautiful women for excellent prices.

Sorry I just noticed the post today. If any of you are in the Santiago area not at a resort I suggest hitting PASSION night club. Its a Stripclub sorta. There are DJ's playing music and people dance on the floor with strippers or with there wives/ girlfriends. (I know this is weird but its normal for guys to take there wives there for a night out) There are girls everywhere flirting, sitting on your lap, ext ext. At the end of the night they do an all nude show or two. But they also do comedy skits and shows, its a fun night out. And at the end of the night which ever girl you want, you take her with you and there are the famous dominican Motels right around the corner.

i have been contemplating a trip down to DR for a long time but the prospect of hiv just freaks me out every time. i mean the percentage is really high, somethin like 13% of providers have it. i dont know man, sounds like playing russian rulette, even with condoms. maybe i am just too paranoid but hell, its playing with your life.
